these writers is decidedly different, which accounts for interesting dynamics in their works. From the beginning of, Falling Angels, the reader is presented with a character who brings a macabre twist to the entire notion of motherhood when she drops her infant child from the waterfalls at Niagara Falls. Far from being a mother, the woman presented in this story is a drunk and neglects her children, leaving their care primarily to her husband who clearly takes on more of a maternal role with the children than she ever does. Clearly, this is a family that epitomizes all that is dysfunctional. In this way, the author offers readers a very bleak examination of birth and motherhood, with the evident intent of engaging readers in an examination of both gender and family function. By creating a role for the mother that is so non-nurturing, the author provokes a discussion of what is, and is not, maternal. The "mother" in this story abandons nearly every responsibility she has as a mother, leaving her children to learn about life on their own. Her whiskey takes precedence over her children, thus creating a permanent rift in her relationship with her children. Whiskey seems to be the only substance that can numb the pain of her unspeakable past, as no mother could possibly contend with the reality of having drown her own helpless son. And so, as the days pass, she uses alcohol to try and quiet the horror that dwells inside of her, ruining the lives of her other children in the process (Moussa, 2003). As a result, ...
