Biodiversity is a term that has become popular, the word itself may be new, but the importance of the meaning has been understood for many years. The
word appears in print for the first time in 1988, used by E O Wilson (1988), in the publication of the proceedings of the National Research Councils (NRC) 1986 National
Forum on Biological Diversity. The term was used as a shortened version of the phrased biological diversity that could be communicated in a more effective manner. The benefit of a
simple understanding for an easily remembered word was a politically desirable effect to push forward the biodiversity agenda into the mainstream media. However, this may also be seen as an
