quartets span the entirety of his career, which means that these works are not only masterpieces that are indicative of Beethovens genius, but they also offer an overview of the course of Beethovens career. Early quartets: Beethoven began composing within the context of the developed quartet models of Haydn and Mozart, whose quartets constitute some of each of these illustrious composers finest works (Winter 3). In his early quartets, Beethoven synthesizes these developments, while also demonstrating the creativity, dynamism and mastery of this musical form that characterize his later work (Selter, et al). As this indicates, in the early quartets, Beethoven is considered by critical opinion to be demonstrating his "mastery of the classical string quartet as developed by Haydn and Mozart" (All About Beethoven). According to David Finckel, of the Emerson String Quartet, Beethoven did not publish his first set of string quartets (Opus 18) until he felt that he was prepared to properly pay homage to the body of work by Haydn and Mozart that had preceded him. However, when he did publish Op. 18, he made "great statement," as these works conveyed the message, "I have taken from and respect my elders and what theyve done and now Im ready to express myself" (Selter, et al). Middle quartets: In the middle-period works, his fully mature form is evident, as Beethoven pushes the boundaries of Classical forms in creating works of "unprecedented size and complexity" (Selter, et al). It was during this period when Beethoven seemed to dash off "one masterpiece after another" (Liu).
