The following discussion first examines the basic beliefs of Judaism and then describes the basic beliefs of Catholicism before comparing the two faiths, as to similarities and differences. The most fundamental concept of Judaic belief is "a commitment by the Jewish people to a single, omnipotent, incorporeal God, who is the creator and ruler of the universe," as well as the "source of moral law for humanity" ("Principal beliefs," 2011). The Shema, a Jewish prayer that is taken from Deuteronomy 6:4-9, is a "declaration of this belief," as well as a key feature of every synagogue service ("Principal beliefs," 2011). The Shema is also recited each day upon waking, as well as during significant moments in life, such as when a death is anticipated. The Shema begins: "Hear, O Israel, the Lord is our God.
