Pakistan, Bangladesh came into existence in 1971 after breaking with West Pakistan. Slightly smaller than the state of Iowa, Bangladesh is bounded by the Bay of Bengal and Burma to the South, and by India on all other borders. An extremely poor nation heavily dependent on agriculture, about a third of Bangladesh floods during each years summer monsoon season. Bangladesh is a developing nation less open to US interests than many other secular nations, but still "negatively neutral." The Country Bangladesh occupies the delta region of large rivers flowing from the Himalayas northwest of the country. The Jamuna river splits the country north to south. The Ganges joins the Jamuna from the west, and later the Meghna empties into the Jamuna from the east. The result is that Bangladesh is not only subject to flooding from monsoons, but also is affected by the amount of water these three large rivers brings from other areas. Bangladesh is a country that ideologically would like to be more economically developed than it is, but has difficulty setting aside political differences to formulate and implement any firm plans for development or improvement in the peoples standard of living. Estimates of per capita income in Bangladesh vary, ranging between a low of $356 annually (Bangladesh, 2003a) to $1,800 (Bangladesh, 2003). In either case, per capita income in Bangladesh is far below the $9,266 point at which the World Bank considers an economy to be a high-income one (What Is An Emerging Market?, 2002).
