written by George Bowering and "Killings," by Andre Dubus. In "Killings," Dubus mainly focuses on the idea of revenge; Strout kills Frank
because of jealousy. Frank is sleeping with his ex-wife, Mary Ann, and Strout desperately tries to redeem himself with her. However, he cant seem to ever get a chance along
with his ex, or his kids, namely because "I couldnt even talk to her," Strout said at one point. "He was always with her . . . " (Dubus 17).
But to Matt, Strouts killing is unjustified, painful and filled with hate - as Frank was his beloved son. With that
in mind, Matt coolly goes about planning the death of his sons murderer (which includes digging a grave for the man, even though he tells his wife hes gone to
catch a Red Sox game at Fenway Park) (Dubus 14). In "A Short Story," Bowerings motive for the murder is somewhat different
(though this was also a crime of passion). In this story, its the woman, Donna, who ends up as the killer; and she kills her mother (again, out of revenge),
because her mother ended up marrying Donnas former lover. In an ironic twist of fate, therefore, Donnas lover ended up becoming her step-father, something, as Bowering shows, Donna was never
able to get over. Other than the fact that the point of view differs between the two stories (Bowering talks about the
story from a first person point of view, calling it "the totally omniscient point of view" on page 119, whereas Dubus uses third person, putting Matt in as the main
