The research article A Longitudinal Study of Adult Life Experiences and Developmental Outcomes by Sharan B. Merriam and Baiyin Yang used a longitudinal approach to assess the link between specific life experiences and developmental outcomes. The research was undertaken to assess due to the lack of solid research in this area, it is noted that there is a great deal of anecdotal evidence the development and learning are linked to life experiences. There is research looking at the development processes and how this impacts on learning and development, but there was a noted gap in the way specific life experiences may impact on specific learning and development areas, such as personal agency. The research is undertaken as an exploratory study, using data from the National Longitudinal Study from the High School class of 1972. Data from these surveys regarding specific life experiences and outcomes was extracted and analysed. The research, using longitudinal data has limited ethical issues, the research would need to ensure that any data given is not capable of identifying any of the respondents, although this is unlikely, there is also the way that the data is analysed to ensure that it is in an objective manner to give it reliability as the way it is used in helping people may rely in its integrity.
