In General Religion in general is concerned with things of the spirit and things of the world, but it seems to often be most concerned with salvation; or perhaps its fairer to say that as humans, we cannot help but fear our own death, and so we seek comfort in religion. Some religions teach that helping others is a way for us to find our own salvation (Catholicism in particular leans toward the idea of grace through good works), but in general it seems that religion first and foremost is concerned with the individual and his relationship with God, rather than his relationship with the world. Jainism Jainism arose in India nearly 3,000 years ago, and was based on the "Four Great Vows: Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (honesty), Asteya (non-stealing), and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness)" (Shah). The vow of chastity (Brahmacharya) was added later, when scholars recognized that "monogamy could not be presumed as an aspect of Aparigraha" (Shah). Jainism is similar to Buddhism in that Jains seek to gain moksha (enlightenment) some day, and follow strict guidelines to reach that goal (Shah). However, Jainism has changed over the centuries, and in those changes we can see the way in which the teachings of the religion have turned outward to impact the way Jains interact with the secular world. One of the basic tenets of Jainism is that all life is sacred, which has led to some Jains outside of India, particularly those living in the West, to become involved in "humanitarian, animal rights, and/or environmental activities ... to alleviate suffering in the world" (Shah).
