had a tiny bit of extra time, time away from survival and gathering food, art came naturally into the life of people enriching their spiritual nature and increasing their ability to reason, be creative, and their intelligence. Unfortunately, many people today think that the arts are merely a waste of time and money, especially in our education system. However, without art of one type or another people cannot live a full and meaningful life and it is becoming more recognized as an important element in anyones life, especially students: "art serves as a window to other worlds as well as his / her inner world. Through personal and successful art experiences, the students self-esteem increases allowing him / her to be a confident contributing member of society" (Art Education Curriculum). Performing Arts If we look back in time, once again, to early man we can envision the importance of dance and music, just two of the many types of performing arts. Dance and music were often used to offer release and expression to people. Dance and music are still powerful sources of release for many people today. If we imagine a world without dancing, a world without music, we would likely envision a world that is stagnant, silent, and incredibly depressing. Even if we are not heavily involved in listening to a particular form of music, it is such a part of our lives, such an important element of our existence that without it we would not likely not be a species that experienced joy or enlightenment.
