The power of art can be staggering. Indeed, in more than one instance the arts have been used as a tool in the reinvention of western Culture itself. Numerous examples can be plucked from the arts which sufficiently illustrate this contention. To add an even greater degree of intrigue, however, we can pick examples which are quite divergent from one another. Two films immediately jump to mind which fit these requirements perfectly. These are Werner Schroeter film "Das Liebeskonzil" ("Council in Heaven") and the recent box office hit "Captain Corellis Mandolin". While "Council in Heaven" serves in the reinvention of the history of the Catholic Church, "Captain Corellis Mandolin" serves in the reinvention of the facts and events surrounding a particular subtheme of World War II. The first film, "Council in Heaven" connotes a quite serious reinvention of Western Civilization, a reinvention in which the Roman Catholic Church would be knocked off its pedestal into a pool of ridicule and condemnation. The second film, "Captain Corellis Mandolin" is much more lighthearted in regard to its artistic liberties. It simply reinvents the construct of war from one in which emotions such as love have the power to overwhelm the realities of death and dying which surround the films characters. "Captain Corellis Mandolin" is really a quite typical modern reflection of artistic liberty. Based on the novel by Louis de Berniere, the film is set on the Greek island of Cephallonia in the 1940s, the film brings to life the turmoil that occurred in 1940 during World War II.
