The author explains that terminology is used to be deceptive, such as referring to the animal as "meat" (Singer 95). A significant point made by the author is everything that is done before the consumer gets hold of the end product is done as a guise, and the consumer is not well informed (Singer 96). In fact, the idea of the farm is a rather pleasant association as few think about the many animals that are killed there (Singer 96). Because farming is competitive, some of those who work in the industry do cruel and unusual things to the animals (Singer 97). This is supported by many reports. For example, Bauer writes about inhumane treatment and wants to pass laws against cruel types of farming methods but most will not agree that morality can be legislated (186). Singer concurs with Bauer in that there is much cruelty in farming. In Singers piece, he does color this essay with his own opinions. Yet, he does say that in order to try to remain objective, he has used researched material as opposed to merely his own experiences (Singer 97). Throughout this chapter, Singer focuses on things that are done to the animals while they wait for slaughter. As if it is not enough that the animals are killed before their natural deaths, Singer focuses on specific aspects of farming.
