The following paper examines whether it was internal or external conflict that cause the most problems in ancient Mesopotamia. Ancient Mesopotamia In better understanding if it was internal or external conflict that caused the most problems we first look at one of Mesopotamias leaders, Sargon I. Sargon I was from the Northern region of Mesopotamia and "When the power of the Sumerian city-states began to collapse due to their constant battling, Sargon I capitalized upon the opportunity and attacked the southern region of Mesopotamia with his armies" (Snyder, 2005). After conquering them he was successful in uniting them with his own home land, Akkad, and in doing so he created the very first empire of the world (Snyder, 2005). "His empire included all of Mesopotamia" (Snyder, 2005). In this we see that it was obviously internal conflict that caused a great deal of chaos in the region. And, in that conflict arose the possibility that a man could gather forces and take over the empire, or the realms, and thus create an empire. However, he ruled for only fifty years and after his death the conflicts arose once more and the empire crumbled (Snyder, 2005). With his passing the individual city-states again took control and then when the Amorites moved into Mesopotamia, around 1800 B.C., they created their own particular city-states: "One of the city-states built was named Babylon, and it was ruled by a king named Hammurabi. As Hammurabi rose to power, he began conquering the city-states of Mesopotamia" (Snyder, 2005). He proved incredibly successful as well, and was ultimately more successful than Sargon I because he created many solid reforms that actually made improvements to the society or societies (Snyder, 2005).
