Eastern and western boundaries were in the high desert on both sides of the narrow strip of the Nile valley and low desert (Lau, 1991). The Nile River is the most important geographic feature in this entire region (Lau, 1991). It runs south to north through the length of Egypt (Lau, 1991). Ancient Egypt has been divided into seven specific and distinct periods of time: 1. 3100-2700 B.C. = Archaic Period 2. 2700-2200 B.C. = Old Kingdom 3. 2200-2050 B.C. = Intermediate Period 4. 2050-1800 B.C. = Middle Kingdom 5. 1800-1570 B.C. = Intermediate Period 6. 1570-1085 B.C. = New Kingdom 7. 1085-332 B.C. = Post-Empire (Casson, 2001). Ancient Egypt was divided into two regions: Upper and Lower Egypt (Lau, 1991). Upper Egypt was located in the southern portion of the country, Lower Egypt in the northern section (Lau, 1991). The Nile Rivers delta, made by the river as it emptied into the Mediterranean, was in Lower Egypt (Lau, 1991). Today, the Delta is 15,000 square miles of alluvium, i.e., silt, which has been deposited as a result of the annual flooding of the Nile for centuries (Lau, 1991). Lower Egypt has historically been sparsely populated but it has been used for cattle grazing (Lau, 1991). Upper Egypt was a long, narrow strip of the country that was located south of the Delta (Lau, 1991).
