In embarking on a case study, an organization of between 25 and 150 members will be used to delve into subjects like the degree of bureaucratization, sensitivity to the outer environment, and patterns of communication. For illustrative purposes, the Actuarial Division of New York Lifes Individual Health Department will be the focus of this investigation. Also, while things have changed a great at NYLIC, and the sections and divisions as set up in the 1980s no longer exist as such, a focus on how things were in the early 1980s will help to shed light on this subject. The early 1980s is an exciting time in which to focus because it had been a time of transition. Although one can use a more current example, it is only in retrospect that one can sufficiently analyze a company and draw conclusions. While this is a very distinct part of New York Life, it does represent an entity in and of itself worthy of analysis. In discussing this division, there are a couple of things which presented challenges. One example is that the division was responsible for implementing numerous systems changes during a time of great transition. This necessitated many members of the division to work closely with programmers of the Electronics Department, thus turning statistical analysts into systems analysts for a time. Another challenge that the division faced was the problem of overtime as the section prepared for its year end annual statement compilation. How would the department deal with the strain of annual statement work in general? These questions will be answered in respect to various aspects as outlined.
