In order to gain a true appreciation for the times, a student of history must not merely peruse textbooks. Fictional literature representing certain epochs can often provide a more enlightened perspective than any primary or secondary historical source. These works enable the student to actually view the time periods through the eyes and experiences of the characters who are living through them. The point of view in which the books are written can also offer additional insight into the prevailing political or social attitudes of the respective times. Italy has had a long and complex history of religious devotion, corruption, moral decadence, and competing political ideologies. After World War I, Western history and literature went into a period known as realism, in which art reflected the horrors brought about by war. Ever on the cutting edge, Italian authors decided to take the genre one step further, creating a major artistic movement known as neorealism, which as the name implies, was a new way of looking at the world. It is also a new way for a student to look at Italian history, as represented in Federico de Robertos I Vicere (The Viceroys), Alberto Moravias Gli Indifferenti (The Time of Indifference), and Leonardo Sciascias Il Giorno della Civetta (The Day of the Owl). Federico de Roberto was once regarded as one of Italys premier novelists, but unfortunately, his reputation has not withstood the test of time.
