all the passion of a first love, but this quickly turned to pain when King Hamlet of Denmark was murdered, and Queen Gertrude hastily married her brother-in-law, Claudius. A
devastated Prince Hamlet was filled with a rage not only against his mother, but against all women. He believed they merely enticed men with their sexual charms only to
betray them later, when their defenses were down. It is recommended that the student writing about this topic consider that both Hamlet and Ophelia are young and impetuous.
They have never before felt such intense emotions, and it is the confusion caused by these emotions that complicates their relationship. When Hamlet devotes his life to exposing Claudius as
his fathers murderer, he must convince everyone around him that he has gone mad, in order to successfully carry out his plan. Naturally, Ophelia must believe Hamlet is truly
mad, or else this will arouse the king and queens suspicions. He is also reeling from what he perceives as his mothers betrayal, and he takes out all of
these frustrations on Ophelia. As for Ophelia, she is portrayed as a fragile flower who has been protected to a fault by her overbearing father Polonius and her equally-domineering
brother Laertes. She is deeply in love with Hamlet, and when he treats her with disdain, she becomes confused and depressed. Hamlet, on the other hand, cannot see
beyond his own torment, and he regards his treatment of her merely as a means to an end. Once he has proven that Claudius murdered his father, Hamlet will
then be free to reveal his complex plan to Ophelia. If she truly loves him, as she insists, she will understand his motivation and ultimately forgive him. Meanwhile, Ophelia
