met in middle school, who would later go on to become one of my best friends. Having grown up in unfavorable financial circumstances, I have always been somewhat resentful of people who possess extravagant wealth, tending to judge them harshly due to the belief that their money insulated them from the painfulness in life that people from lower economic classes, such as myself, experienced on a regular basis. Because this particular girl seemed to have a great deal of money, I convinced myself that she was spoiled, na?ve, and ignorant - characteristics that played into my mental conception of the stereotypical "rich person". However, through my later interactions with the girl I discriminated against, I came to realize that generalizations against any group of people, including the wealthy, are harmful and do not accurately represent the reality of human experience. In this section of the paper, the student is helped to present his story. I first met the girl in question when I was in the seventh grade. She was quite popular, but very quiet, and I interpreted this silence as her being "stuck up". Another female friend of mine had gone shopping with her and some other friends one weekend and told me in private that the girl was "loaded", and that her mother had given her $500 to spend on the shopping trip in question. $500, at that point, was more money than I had ever seen in my life, and I wondered what this girl had done to deserve such a boon. Later, upon overhearing her talk in class, I heard her mention that she owned a few ponies. This cemented, for me, my discriminatory conception of her as spoiled.
