This 16 page paper considers the way in which the fire service in the UK can be seen in terms of fairness and equality. The paper looks the presence of ethnic minorities and also at the introduction of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 after a long period of exemption for the uniformed services. The way in which this is applied to the fire service and rescue service is examined and the interaction with other safety legislation is also considered. This means that an individual with a disability can no longer be subject to discrimination. However, laws do not change organisational cultures over night and there value is in the enforcement seen. Therefore, the value of a law which has only come into effect for the fire service so recently has not yet been tested. WE can argue that those who are were already classified under a minority requiring legislative protection, such as black or minatory ethnic employees, may now be recognised as doubly disadvantages if discretion is taking place. The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 may still see many individual excluded form certain jobs, according to health and safety regulations there is a requirement to assure the safety of all the staff. This means that many people with disabilities may still be excluded, but with a justifiable reason. However, not all disabilities are visible and many will not effect the way a fire-fighter or supporting staff undertake their job. One such disability is dyslexia. For some jobs this may create a difficulty, but for many others it will not. Severe dyslexia is classified as a disability under this act (Dyslexia Association, 2004). If we are going to to at dyslexia we need to look for a good definition of the condition. This may be "Dyslexia is a learning-based disorder that is biological in origin and primarily interferes with the acquisition of print literacy (reading, writing, and spelling). Dyslexia is characterized by poor decoding and spelling abilities as well as deficits in phonological awareness and/or phonological manipulation." (Padget, 1996; 55). ...
