This story is actually a book-length poem which is filled with mortals, mythological figures, action, killing, love, hate, and everything in between. Achilles is said to be the central
figure in this compelling story and his presence is evident throughout much of the plot. Achilles was "the mightiest of the Greeks
who fought in the Trojan War, and was the hero of Homers Iliad" (Hunter). He was the son of the mortal Peleus and the Nereid Thetis (Hunter). Thetis
tried to make her son immortal by anointing him with ambrosia then placing him on a fire in order to burn away the mortal portions, but this didnt work (Hunter).
During this process she was interrupted by Peleus, his father, and she became so enraged that she left them both (Hunter). It was at this point that Peleus
took the child to Centaur Chiron, who then raised the young Achilles and educated him (Hunter). It is interesting to
note that a common expression is "Achilles heel" (Hunter). The origin of this phrase is indeed from mythology and the story begins when Achilles is given to Centaur Chiron
(Hunter). She takes him to the River Styx because, "everything the sacred waters touched became invulnerable, but the heel remained dry and therefore unprotected" (Hunter). Hence, the phrase
"Achilles heel" (Hunter). When the Trojan War broke out, Thetis again reclaimed her son because she had heard rumors that
