is the quintessential lover and friend and leader. One can say that Othello is a good citizen. He is also a pleasant person. By the end of the play, he is a murderer. While Shakespeare perhaps tries to justify this characters behavior as he was duped, the truth is that ordinary people are murderers and Othellos transition through the play is rather chilling. Had he been this way all along? Had he changed through the course of the work? In looking at this work objectivity, one can say that Othello clearly does change. He begins as a man, and just an ordinary man at that. In fact, he is rather well liked. He has friends and marries Desdemona. Othello is also a general in the army and has made an enemy who ironically turns out to be the one who was supposed to push Desdemona towards another suitor. When Iago turns on Othello, the results of course are disastrous, but the point is that while Othello perhaps has an enemy or two, he is a powerful man. Many admire him and the audience likely does too. In some way, this is the problem with the work in that Othello is painted as a larger than life figure. He is perfect. He is a leader as well as a handsome and delightful mate for Desdemona. Because Othello begins as this wonderful man--and also because the play is named for him--the audience perceives him as good. Viewers do tend to categorize people as good and bad. Another point is that this play has been aligned with the subject of racism and this fact perhaps plays into the change that envelops Othello.
