to as the "second" Ku Klux Klan since the group had been dormant since the 1870s. But then, in 1915, William Joseph Simmons revived the group with the help of a very powerful marketing/promotions team and also by adding mystery and intrigue to the group process, in the hopes of enticing members with the perception of status attached to membership. To enhance the Klans mystique, he designed a special alliterative lexicon for the movement. And he painstakingly worked out the details of elaborate rituals whereby members advanced in the order by obtaining "degrees" as they did in other fraternal orders. Man local Klansmen took the bait; they delighted in impressing their fellows with their mastery of Klan ritual (MacLean, 1995, p. 6). The second Klan, under the direction of Simmons, was far more hateful, vengeful and terrorizing than the original. But it took time to develop, and reached its full force after World War I. At its height, it is estimated that the Klan had between one and five million members. What is most horrific to learn in this book is the profile of the "typical" Klan member. He wasnt a beer-drinking loser unable to hold a job and who beats his wife for fun. The truth is that Klan members are revealed in this book to be "normal", hard-working, church-going respectable members of their communities. In other words, its the guy-next-door. In particular, Maclean (1995) focuses on the Athens, Georgia chapter, which oddly enough left behind very descript records for a group so intent on secrecy. ...
