Essay / Research Paper Abstract

This 6 page report discusses the interaction between alfalfa crops and a common weed. The weed chosen for examination is Barbarea vulgaris, most commonly known as 'yellow rocket.' Yellow rocket is usually biennial or perennial with some plants flowering, setting seed and dying after their first growing season; reproducing only by seed but the seeds are notable for their ability to germinate with minimal soil requirements. Yellow rocket and other weeds reduce alfalfa production during establishment by competing with and choking out young alfalfa seedlings, invade established alfalfa fields, and reducing forage quality and yield. Several aspects of intervention and eradication are discussed. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

The focus of this report is a weed with a less exotic but still amusing common name - "yellow rocket," also known as Barbarea vulgaris. A member of the mustard family the brightly colored plant is common throughout much of North America. Along the roadside, in old fields, wastelands, and river bottoms. In fact, the plant can turn entire fields bright yellow when in full bloom. Despite its delicate blossoms and vibrant color it is a disaster for farmers whose crops it invades. In most areas of North America is considered to be an invasive exotic plant. Its impact and potential impact on alfalfa is significant. According to Pimentel, Lach, Zuniga, and Morrison (1999), invading non-indigenous species (NIS) in the United States cause major environmental damage, public health problems and cost the nation billions f dollars each year. In crop systems, including forage crops, an estimated 500 introduced plant species have become weed pests. Most of these were accidentally introduced with crop seeds, from ship ballast, or from various other imported plant materials. Some of these accidentally introduced weeds, like yellow rocket (Barbarea vulgaris) and Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense), are major weed pests. Pimentel, Lach, et al (1999) add that in U.S. agriculture, weeds cause a reduction of 12% in crop yields or, in economic terms, about $36 billion in crop production annually, based on crop potential value of all U.S. crops of more than $300 billion per year (USDA 1996). Yellow Rocket (Barbarea vulgaris) . . . also known as Winter Cress, Bitter Cress, Rocket Cress Yellow rocket is usually biennial or perennial with some plants flowering, setting seed and dying after their first growing season; reproducing only by seed. Root system on young plants is a taproot, becoming multi-branched ...
