Thomas was born in Born in Columbus, Georgia in 1891 (National Gallery of Art [1], 2006). The oldest of four daughters she moved, with her family, to Washington, DC when
she was 15 (National Gallery of Art [1], 2006). She was, in 1924, the first graduate in the art department at Howard University and then, much later, received her Masters
from Columbia University (The African American Registry, 2006). It was in 1925 that she began her career, a career of 35 years, of teaching (National Gallery of Art [1], 2006).She
taught art at at Shaw Junior High in Washington (National Gallery of Art [1], 2006). Her dedication to teaching and the
students consumed her creative energy and so she did not really give her own career any attention until the 1960s (National Gallery of Art [1], 2006). "In the exhibitions of
those years, Thomas drew upon all her sensory, childhood memories of rich vegetation, her own garden, the formal plantings of the capital city, and the musical sounds of nature to
develop a painting style that gained her mainstream attention" (National Gallery of Art [1], 2006). Her work was heavily influenced by the nature
