the author explores the Muslim world and how womens rights are affected. This is an important topic in todays day and age. After all, there are many accusations about Muslim
countries and how they mistreat women. In fact, that has been a point of contention when it involves the war in Iraq. Some have argued that the nations are backward
and need an overhaul and some in the west point to antiquated rules concerning women. Yet, Afkhami (1995) sets things straight by providing credible writings in a single volume. In
comparing and contrasting the essays contained in the book, some themes emerge. It appears that there are many extreme notions to come through about Islam, but these are not necessarily
valid. In fact, that is the point of the inquiry. According to a student, it appears that Islam as a religion does allow women many rights, but extremist groups and
authoritarian rules have denied them their rightful place in society. Indeed, it seems that it is not Islam that should be attacked, but rather, the aberrant leaders who implement Islam
in a negative manner. In reading this book, it appears that this thematic element is present. In examining the writings in the book, it also appears that many of the
writers are quite knowledgeable about the Muslim world and everything comes to the table first hand. This makes for a credible book and with the various opinions that seem to
concur, a basis on which to draw conclusions. If many of the authors are in agreement, it does seem that the ideas are credible. While arguable, there is a sense
of authenticity and the writers are for the most part quite knowledgeable. The author also orders the book in such a way as to group essays by topic and this
