This paper examines statistics about high risk behavior from one source, summarizes three articles that discuss various types of risky behavior, and compares the original statistics with those given in the articles. The Statistics and a Hypothesis There are five sets of statistics presented with this case. The first is a "gender-date" array of arrest statistics, which reveals that overall, more men than women are arrested, and that slightly more men are arrested on the weekend than during the week; the same holds true for women. The chi-square tests applied to this statistic reveal 143 valid cases out of 143 examples. The second set of statistics is a "gender-charge" statistic (the charge is driving under the influence), and here the picture changes. For one thing, there are substantially more arrests: 181 to 143, indicating that drinking is a problem for this age group. Here again the men outnumber the women: 69 men were arrested for DUI compared to 8 women; and 89 men were arrested for non-DUI offenses as compared to 21 women. The chi-square tests applied here validate all 181 cases. The third is a "date-charge" set of statistics, indicating when the arrests occurred. Perhaps not surprisingly, most of the DUI arrests took place on the weekends. DUI arrests were 44 on the weekend and 16 during the week; however, non-DUI arrests numbered 33 on the weekend but 53 during the week. The chi-square tests validated 146 out of 146 cases.
