I gained considerable insight into the nature of health care support, issues that individuals and families face in the health care setting, and the need for more effective interventions on the behalf of individuals and families in hospitals across the nation. I am pursuing advancement in my education as a basis for professional development, so that I can provide services to individuals, families, groups, and communities within a healthcare environment. I have also recognized that social workers not only provide direct support, but can work towards important legislative change in order to improve the health and welfare of individuals and communities. Ultimately, I would like to expand my professional development to enable myself to be a part of an active, changing process that provides for the needs of others. Perhaps the most significant problem facing social workers relative to social welfare is the overwhelming cost of healthcare in the United States. In fact, the lack of access to healthcare because of the cost and the lack of an effective national program for health care impacts more than half of the American population. One of the most damaging myths in the debates surrounding public policy determinations and health care is that the only population of underserved in the United States are the poor and homeless.
