One theory to emanate from a former BBC correspondent is that AIDS was accidentally introduced during vaccine trials during the 1950s and 1960s ("Did A," 1999). This is not a new idea. Others have suggested that this might have been the case, in part because monkey cells were used to create the polio vaccine in particular. In any event, nothing has been proven conclusively and the origin of this mysterious disease continues to plague the medical community as well as HIV infected patients. No matter what the origin, and perhaps its true cause will never be found, AIDS has become a well known disease due to its rampant spread through the society. The United States has waged war on this disease, promoting condom use in an attempt to prevent its continued spread as it is fostered through sexual practices, including ordinary heterosexual sex. When people like Freddy Mercury, Rock Hudson and Magic Johnson were found to have the disease, media did sensationalize it a bit and the social response was mixed. No one is ever elated to hear that someone had died of AIDS, but for example, when Freddy Mercury passed, Queen songs made a comeback for a weekend or two. People mourned the memory of Hudson as well. However, when it was initially announced that Hudson had AIDS, and that he was gay, it was a shock. Hudson came down with the disease when it had only been around for a short while. In fact, it helped to bring media attention and also, helped to connect AIDS with the gay lifestyle.
