The first comparison will be with the revenue or turnover, to indicate the changed level of business. In most businesses it will be expected that there will be growth
each year, therefore it is not only an increase that will be considered, but other indicators of increased business, such as increased unit sales. This will usually be expressed as
a percentage increase on the previous year (Elliott and Elliott, 2005). For example, if there was a turnover of 50,000 in 2006 and then a 55,000 in 2007, this would
mean that there was a 10% increase in turnover. However prices may have changed and as such there may have only been a unit increase of 7% with the remaining
increase in revenue made up by price increases. The opposite may also be true, if there is increasing competition and prices have fallen the unit sales may have increased at
a greater rate than the revenue, in this case we will assume that there is an increase made up party from inflation and partly from increased sales. The turnover
is only one area of concern; there will also need to be consideration of the profit. A business with increasing turnover does not automatically result in a business with increasing
profit levels and the primary aim of a business is usually to increase profits. Therefore, the profit figure will also be important along with the change on the last year.
