to develop a character, to move the plot forward, or to act as a metaphor for the novel. It is not gratuitous or vacuous, but rather serves a purpose. In
the novel, Madame Bovary and in The Diary of a Seducer, the illicit affair is utilized in much the same way. Madame Bovary is
a woman of exceptional appetites. In other words, she is never satisfied. She wants to marry Charles, but then is disappointed when he does not measure up to the romantic
heroes in the novels that she reads. She becomes pregnant but is disappointed because the baby is a girl and not a boy. She has several affairs, but ends them
eventually when the men begin to bore her. In essence, she uses people to get what she wants, but what she wants she can scarcely say.
It would seem that she is attempting to rise above her class, that most of her discomfort and frustration come from the fact that she was a part of
the bourgeois. She desires to be financially and socially mobile, but lacks the means necessary to do so. This desire drives her to borrow great sums of money, which in
the end get her into trouble with a loan shark. Eventually much of her and Charles property is confiscated. Her illicit affairs, and there
were many, are utilized as a metaphor for the rising middle class during this time in history. Like Madame Bovary the new middle class were professionals who did not have
to perform manual labor in order to make their living. However, they were not landed gentry, nor did they have the social etiquette that comes from generations of having money.
