The U.S. Army, and the U.S. military in general, are sworn to uphold and protect this society and the rights of its citizens, as represented in the U.S. Constitution. However, in order to accomplish this purpose, the U.S. Army, as well as the other services, impose a military hierarchy and structure in which individuals voluntarily subvert their personal will to the goal of protecting and serving the welfare of others. In order to accomplish this goal of service, the Army relies on a body of knowledge that encompasses an ethos of behavior and which also encompasses professional standards that are designed to create and maintain the effectiveness of this organization. A fundamental principle in this paradigm is the concept that a soldier should always be at his or her appointed place of duty. With the lexicon of Army professionalism, a "place of duty" refers to precisely where the soldier is assigned. This may be at a stateside Army base, an institution of higher learning, or on the front lines in Iraq. Wherever the soldier is assigned, the Army relies on the teamwork of all its members in order to accomplish its appointed tasks. The Army is a huge organization, with assigned places of duty that range throughout the globe. Yet, each soldier, whether enlisted personnel or officers, is part of a specific task force, part of a team, and, therefore, responsible not only for himself or herself, but also responsible to and for the work assigned to that team. Professionalism, and military law, demand that soldiers acknowledge this responsible and report to their place of duty at all times.
