the literature once used women as nothing but figures of domestic concerns, people who were not much more than property. Various authors through the ages have, however, presented women in
different and more positive lights, illustrating their need for security and their struggle to possess such in a world that belongs to men. Two pieces of literature which offer us
such perspectives are Virginia Woolfs "A Room of Ones Own" and Bernard Shaws "Mrs. Warrens Profession." In the following paper we examine the elements within each story and then briefly
compare and contrast the two. A Room of Ones Own "Virginia Woolf, one of the founders of the movement known as Modernism, is one of the most important
woman writers in English. Her stream-of-consciousness essays and novels provide an invaluable insight into both her own life experiences and those of women at the beginning of the twentieth century"
(Lavender ownroom.html). She was not a woman to simply argue, publicly, about the wrongs done to women, but an individual who immersed herself in writing as a way of changing
the role of women. Instead of verbal words, she took decisive action through her works. And, in her style she presented herself as a very powerful modern literist. In
"A Room of Ones Own" she presents the reader with the reality of frustration for women writers. She illustrates how women, in the past, were not even allowed to obtain
an education in schools, and were certainly not seen as intelligent creatures. Woolf addressed this reality by creating a character who was Shakespeares sister. She offers the reader a woman
who has the same creativity and ingenious abilities as William but she lacked any public or social support for her work. Historically speaking, such a woman would not have been
