this position, she supervises a team of four therapists who provide service to preschool children, ages 3-5, who have identified traumas in their background. Linda arrived at her office early, anticipating the challenges inherent in overseeing and juggling the many observations, assessments and consultations that would be undertaken that day by her department as they evaluated the needs of children who had undergone some form of trauma. The forms of trauma to which their young clients were exposed range from a variety of causes, such as poverty, medical treatment, the loss of a loved one, having a parent in prison, a parent with substance abuse issues or mental illness, or being exposed to domestic violence. Lindas therapists are either social workers or psychologists. She thinks of their intersecting area of commonality in terms of a Venn diagram, as there are areas of expertise in both of these specialties that her department does not address. However, there are also areas in which they overlap and it is within this area that her department functions. As mental health counselors, they endeavor to determine what children and their families need and they address those needs, referring them to other experts as needed. The first case to draw Lindas attention pertained to a three-year-old whose asthma was acerbated by her familys living conditions in a run-down tenement where mildew was evident. She noted that the counselor handling the case had referred the childs parents to a social worker who would help them obtain better housing. As the agency operates using a bio-psycho-social framework, Linda made a note to follow-up with the counselor as to whether or not the child was experiencing any psychological or social ramifications from the experience of having frequent asthma attacks, as well as ensuring that the steps taken ...
