Current System and Existing Problems There is no current system in place for cleaning the pool, though pool staff has been asked to check the pool area, clean the pool minimally, and check chlorine and pH levels periodically. The current condition of the pool is poor. A visual assessment of the pool determined a number of physical problems, including, but not limited to: the presence of vegetative debris in the water, the presence of insects in the water and on the surrounding deck, and the presence of bird feces in the water, on the deck and on surrounding pool furniture. A test of the water pH and chlorine levels suggest that proper care is not being taken to ensure that the pool is not contaminated with a harmful microbial presence, and so this is an additional concern and a health directive for putting into place an effective plan for pool cleaning on a regular basis. Opportunities There are two different approaches to the management of the pool cleaning project: the use of a private pool cleaning service at a considerable cost to the school or the use of student workers to help with weekly cleaning at a nominal cost. Because of the budgetary constraints and the request for cost containment measures, the opportunity to use the student workers on a weekly basis is the best opportunity for this project.
