the charged political environment of our day comments that the European health care systems are superior are not that uncommon. In reality, however, both the European health care systems and the US system leave much to be desired in some regards. One recent poll reveals that while there is a fifty percent rate of dissatisfaction to one degree or another with the current US health care system, there is a sixty-one percent rate of dissatisfaction with both the Spanish and Italian health care systems (Business Wire). Furthermore, sixty percent of Great Britains, fifty-four percent of Germans, and forty-three percent of the French believe that although each of their systems have certain areas where praise is deserved, "fundamental changes are needed to make it work better" (Business Wire). Given such rates of unhappiness it would be logical to assume that the same type of health care system was in play in each of these countries. This, however, is not the case. The US health care system differs substantially from the European systems and those differ between each other. Never-the-less, there is discontent and criticism surrounding each. While some of the European health care system share many similarities with socialized medicine, the US system of health care is based on the capitalistic system that we hold so dearly. In the U.S. our health care system has revolved around Medicare/Medicaid for several generations. This is a type of national health plan that a person is entitled to utilize because they have either paid taxes into the system and reached retirement age or because they have become disabled.
