the fortunes of Victoria, an anti-heroine if there ever was one. This paper compares the similarities between Othello and Zofloya using the theme of jealousy. Discussion It should be noted at the beginning that Zofloya is in reality Satan in disguise. He takes the form of a Moor (a black man) in his dealings with Victoria and her family, until such time as he decides to reveal himself, which is shortly before he kills her. He is a deadly trickster, with nothing noble about him. Othello, on the other hand, is a genuinely noble man, but his insecurities about his place in society and his marriage to a white woman leave him easy prey for Iagos schemes. On the surface, there seem to be few similarities between the two characters. But they are similar in one way, and although its obvious its also vitally important: they are both black. A debatable claim can be made that the blackness of the characters is not used in the same way in both works, despite its importance. Within the idea of blackness is contained the idea of the Other, which does apply to both characters. The Other is a term used by psychologists and sociologists to describe the way in which society considers those who are different. The psychological construct of the Other is applied to the person from another culture or race who is excluded by his or her race from full "membership" in the dominant group. This also gives members of the mainstream society tacit permission to treat the Other as they like, which is often with hostility. This is the phenomenon at work when governments use propaganda to demonize the enemy: the "Huns" who bayoneted babies and ate them, for instance; or the "Japs" who threatened civilization as the "Yellow ...
