Statistics on juvenile crime are kept at the national level by the National Criminal Justice Reference Center, which is a federally funded agency that is part of the Justice Department. Their site provides a link to the National Center for Juvenile Justice (NCJJ), which is where well turn first. The NCJJ provides statistics on the national level for crime up through 2005; it uses four violent crimes to determine the overall rate of violent crime. It picks the four (homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault) because they are always reported in every jurisdiction. Other "petty" crimes may not show up in the reports, but these four invariably do, and thus give a good picture of juvenile crime. As of the end of 2005, the NCJJ showed 81,600 crimes in the violent crime index; 58% of the committed by young people under 16; 19% by females and 44% by whites (Juvenile court statistics, 2005). Breaking that down among the four major crimes yields the following: there were 1,400 homicides, 37% by people under 16; 17% by females; and 57% by whites (Juvenile court statistics, 2005). There were 4,400 rapes, 57% by people under 16, 3% by females, and 67% by whites (Juvenile court statistics, 2005). There were 26,000 robberies, 55% by those under 16 (this is out of all juvenile crime statistics, not out of all statistics), 10% by females and 29% by whites (Juvenile court statistics, 2005).
