Perhaps the most functional definition would be copy that it is clear or easily understandable, concise or to the point, and has content that is relevant to the specific subject matter, informative, and express a distinctive message. It should also feature the technical fundamentals of proper grammar, punctuation, paragraphing and spelling; material should be well organized; include citations of any quoted references, if required; and the copy should be both factually and statistically accurate. Dietetics is one of the fastest growing professions of the early twenty-first century, and is heavily reliant upon writing proficiency. Aside from administrative dietitians, there are four types of dietetics employees who must exhibit excellent writing abilities in order to successfully perform their job responsibilities. Clinical dietitians work in hospitals, clinics and nursing homes and are responsible for creating and implementing dietary plans, educating patients on proper nutrition, and report research findings (Snelling and Snelling, 1989). Community nutritionists are employed by health organizations (such as the "Meals on Wheels" program). They provide nutritional counseling and also develop and implement nutrition programs (Snelling and Snelling, 1989). Program dietitians are usually employed by medical, educational or public health facilities and study all facets of nutrition geared toward dietary improvements (Snelling and Snelling, 1989). Finally, dietetic educators are nutritional instructors who work in universities or hospitals, and also devote much time to writing about nutrition to inform the public of current trends and suggest viable dietary alternatives (Snelling and Snelling, 1989). Writing skills are needed to create menus, devise dietary programs and nutritional recommendations for individuals or the public, conduct research in the field of dietetics, educating on topical issues, or make suggestions to improve diets and nutritional value.
