the way in which the concept of modernity and the position of women in Islam are related, it is useful to look at the way in which women have been
regarded historically within Islamic society. For example, Badawi (2002) makes a number of significant points regarding the way in which Muslim women have been perceived over the centuries. He notes
that there are numerous instances in Islamic history of the achievements of women, which date back to the seventh century, and that the social conduct and demeanour of Muslim women
has always been regarded with admiration by non-Islamic peoples.
In addition, there are clearly defined legal and social rights accorded to women under Islamic law, and this mediates against the mistreatment of women. He also notes
that it is through their own efforts that women have reached their current status in society, rather than through the patronage of men or natural social progress. He acknowledges that
Muslim women have undergone considerable struggle and sacrifice, and have made vital contributions to society.
Like other writers, he sees the current position of women as reflecting the respect in which they were held in previous eras:
this is not, however, seen as a desire to return to the past, but rather as an indication of the inherent truth of the Quran. Those points in Islamic cultural
development in which women were not accorded the respect and honour which they deserve are perceived as the result of social forces, and a misinterpretation of the Quran. The higher
