This would seem ludicrous in a society that values women and sees more females than males enrolling in institutions of higher learning. Yet, when it comes to being taken seriously in academia, women continue to have problems. One author writes: "Women students face traditional access issues such as perceived stereotypes and a lack of positive role models in all areas of their undergraduate careers. Those include application procedures, in assessments, and in the lack of flexible entry and exit points to Higher Education that family commitments can require" ("Equality Issues," 2008). In respect to students actually having a stellar college career, there are roadblocks. Perhaps underneath it all are fears that the female students will not succeed. Yet, this is tied to the perception is it respects the professors. After all, while female students are flocking to colleges and universities, they do not have the role models in academia that would encourage them to succeed in their chosen fields. In an anonymous article published in Women in Higher Education, an author explains that many women in academia are faced with subtle inequalities, but ones that are deeply entrenched ("Academic Women Face Quiet Desperation," 2008). That is, there are inequalities in the profession, but they are not obvious. The observation made is based on a study that had been published in Perspectives in Politics ("Academic Women Face Quiet Desperation," 2008). The study involved eighty women who are a part of the faculty at the University of California at Irvine and it was concluded that the university failed to foster a good home and work balance ("Academic Women Face Quiet Desperation," 2008).
