hope to win their countrys independence is Deong. He had fought as a guerrilla with MacWhite against the Japanese during World War II. The mens prior friendship flounders
in the face of international disagreements. This leads to war and tragedy. The "Ugly American" focuses on a personal relationship between two
men that mirrors the relationship their countries. Those countries are the United States, which is still in the paroxysm of the Cold War, and Sarkhan, which is an emerging
Southeast Asian state. The setting is events that happen almost twenty years after MacWhite and Deong had fought together. They are now positioned as potential adversaries. MacWhite
is the new American ambassador to Sarkhan and Deong is the leader of the Sarkhanese nationalists. The book is set in the late
1950s or early 1960s. The atmosphere is definitely that of the Cold War. The major concern is his relationship with Deong, when MacWhite faces the Senate committee that
reviews his appointment as ambassador to Sarkhan. A senator questions Deongs nationalist views and equates them with Communism. His perception is that anyone who is not totally committed
to the American way must be regarded as the enemy. MacWhite has to explain his World War II association with Deong and the development of their relationship in the
ensuing years, and account for Deongs opposition to the pro-American regime that now rules Sarkhan. There is strong anti-American feeling in Sarkhan.
