Night is the idea that God has deserted both the narrator and humanity as a whole: Wiesel constantly reiterates his feeling that God no longer exists, or asks where He is when suffering, such as the executions in the camp, is allowed to take place. He shows in the course of the book how human beings react when their concept of God, rather than a ground state of being, is externalised and held responsible for the actions of humanity. He cannot understand how the deity which he has been told is protective and loving could allow the atrocities which he has witnessed: he feels that by failing to strike down the perpetrators of these deeds, God has failed him. Either he has been given a false image of the deity, or God does not even exist. He draws parallels between the way that God is represented in the scriptures, and the events he is witnessing: the boy who is hanged, for example, is God . . hanging on the gallows, which implies that although he himself is Jewish, he can see a definitive link between the murdered child and the figure of Christ. It must be remembered, also, in this context, that one of the most important principles of Judaism is the concept that if one abides by the rules and prescriptions which form such an important part of the faith, then one is rewarded with Gods love and protection. Since it is evident that to behave with such perfection is not possible, there is an assumption that a sincere attempt to do so will also be rewarded.
