SA148NOI.rtf I. Introduction Many remember the civil rights movement, the sit in at the Walgreens lunch counter, the images of Klansman in their white creamers and the signs that said "Whites only." It was a part of history that few can forget. People are still alive who experienced this time in the first part of the twentieth century. Yet, it is difficult to fathom that what went on during that time period, actually happened in the United States of America. Enter Bobby Seale and the Black Panthers and activist Angela Davis, who still incidentally lectures at colleges. The 1960s were replete with violence. Malcolm X would incite people to stand up for themselves. In fact, two leaders of the day stand out and they are Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. Each leader was very different in his own right. Malcolm X supported the notion that social change must be propelled by radical measures and contrarily, Martin Luther King supported quiet rallies, passive resistance and promoted an aura of peace. While their leadership styles were certainly different they each made a name for themselves. Malcolm did make his points known, and Martins legacy is quite obvious as every January the nation celebrates Martin Luther King day. There were many other movements.
