A reason as to why one mom decided to stay at home comes from Sugars book called When Mothers Work, Who Pays?: " My mother mostly always worked and while my other friends went home to a "stay-at-home" mother and had home-made cookies waiting for them, I went home to an empty house after school. I swore I wouldnt do that to my children" (Sugar 10) . The sentiments to come from that book, and the title, indicate that the children are in some way harmed when a mother works, but nothing could be further form the truth. As the participant who gave the quote noted, she decided not to work largely for emotional reasons. She remembers a childhood where she was one of the only "latch key" kid on the block. Yet, those memories reflect a time and place that was perhaps not as cozy as Beaver Cleaver days, but like June, many mothers just did not work. Largely, there was not as much opporutniy. Also, in the days to which she refers women were not expected to go to college. Today, gender is not a factor in planning a childs education. It is hoped that everyone would go, and then create a life that provides fulfilling work. That is what is considered a full life. Further, going back to work after having children is not bad for the family. There is a general consensus that when the mother works, there is more money for special things or things that the chldren need (Burleigh 92).
