Furthermore, the cost of higher education is exorbitant and the future of high school graduates is largely dependent on obtaining secondary education in some form. To all of these problems, military enlistment offers an answer. The number one reason why people enlist is to obtain he superb educational benefits offered by the military (OBrien). Each branch of the service offers "accredited college level training" in virtually every career field, and, as a veteran, an ex-GI can obtain more than $39,000 in educational benefits via the Montgomery GI Bill (OBrien). Todays military is thoroughly computerized, offering training in numerous high-tech occupations ("Beyond High School"). There are few opportunities in the private sector that equal what the military has to offer, as it possible in the military to earn while you learn a job specialty and also have the benefit of free medical and dental care ("Beyond High School"). The military offers the finest in healthcare services, not only for service personnel, but for their families. In the US today there are 46 million people without health insurance coverage and those who do have health insurance "pay increasingly higher prices" to retain coverage (Fiore A1). At one time General Motors offered a health plan equal to the one offered by the military, but while employers, such as GM, have cut benefits, the military has not only maintained the same level of benefits, but has improved on health benefits (Fiore A1).
