these cases, the defendants serve the dual purpose of being both government patsies and "the peoples" martyrs-creating a divisive legacy. During the "Red" scare of the 1920s, Sacco and Vanzetti were found guilty of robbery and murder on July 14,1921, which launched a spying defense from a criminal court case. On August 23, 1927, these martyrs of the Italian anarchist movement were put to death (DAttilio). The importance of the trial and ongoing defense actions served not to convict the criminals, but to expose the decadence of the American justice system under J. Edgar Hoover. The governments inheritance includes perjury by government witnesses, illegal activities by the police and the Fed, and a rejected confession by a convicted bank robber Celestino Madeiros. All of these facts led to a much bigger movement. "Throughout America liberals and well-meaning people of every sort, troubled and outraged by the injustice of the legal process, joined the more politically radical anarchists, socialists, and communists in protesting the verdict against Sacco and Vanzetti. . . Ranged against the defenders of Sacco and Vanzetti were conservatives and patriots who wanted to defend the honor of American justice and to uphold law and order. Many of them came to see these protests as an attack upon the American way of life on behalf of two common criminals". (DAttilio) Instead, "by April 9, 1927, the two men had become "powerful symbols of social justice for many throughout the world" (DAttilio).
