and that is not necessarily something that conforms to societal norms. There are variances in terms of how a woman will act. Can a woman wear overalls, wear a firemans uniform, fix a car, ride a motorcycle and cut the grass? The answer is a resounding yes! Femininity is not necessarily aligned with womanhood or being female. I always have known how a woman should act, because actions are not always gender specific. I think of lesbians and wonder if they are more effeminate or masculine because of their sexual orientation. I know that when watching some gay men who exhibit these feminine tendencies, they stand out in a crowd. I know one man named Ted who, all of his life, appeared to be gay because of his feminine mannerisms. He was married and had children and was active in the church. Everyone noticed he was effeminate. Yet, he was a man. He was just a gay man. Of course, he did not come out until many years later. Joe observes: "Its worth remembering that in the days of "passing" it was the effeminate gay male who could not" ("News, views," 2006). The point of the anecdote is that no one should act in a gender-specific way. Actions are not necessarily indicative of gender. I am a woman and I decide how a woman acts. I act as I want and I intrinsically know who I am and how, as a woman, I should act. Ted acted how he knew he had to, and perhaps he was conflicted. I act in ways that are in concert with how most other women do and I am confident in my womanhood. Does society try to prime young boys and girls to act in a certain way that is gender specific?
