Essay / Research Paper Abstract

A 9 page paper discussing empirical evidence that changes in dividends convey information about an organizations current or future business results. In its simplest definition, each declaration of dividends represents a partial dissolution of the company, as cash has been paid out rather than retained as earnings for the purpose of increasing equity, but dividends can signal far more information than only that the organization had one good year. Some companies do pay inflated dividends in the hope of attracting additional investors, but most cannot continue indefinitely. Dividends paid to shareholders make positive statements of the company's current and anticipated performance. The paper reviews much of the empirical studies into what information is conveyed through dividend payments. Bibliography lists 25 sources.
