puts himself in the place of a newspaper reporter who is doing a feature article on the situation and how it has developed over the years since the end of WWI, so that in 1939, Europe is again facing war. Discussion I began my career as a reporter in 1915, the year after the "Great War" began, and I saw first-hand the carnage of the conflict. I have never seen anything as horrifying as the slaughter of the battles of Verdun and the Somme; thousands of troops slaughtered in pointless struggles that went on for months, back and forth, back and forth, over the same few yards of ground. I spent time in the awful trenches, smelling the rotten stench from bodies hung up on the barbed wire in no-mans land, listening to the shells explode, and I realized its no place for anyone who wants to retain his sanity. I had hoped never to see that nightmare again, but now it appears that Europe is about to be convulsed again. In the 24 years since I began reporting, things have gone from bad to worse. At first the Armistice was hailed as bringing an end to the most brutal conflict in history, but it soon became apparent to any objective observer that the Versailles Treaty was bound to cause problems. While it may be difficult put oneself in the enemys place, its necessary to do so in order to understand whats happening today. Herr Hitler and Germany are clearly maneuvering Europe to the point where war will come, sooner or later, probably sooner. The question is why, and for an answer to that we have to return to the Treaty of Versailles and the chaos in Germany at the end of the war. I would like to point out ...
