The technology, in fact, is being deployed to help in the area of law enforcement and criminal justice. For example, three cities in Wisconsin - Fitchburg, Sun Prairie and Middleton - are set up through wireless connections to share law enforcement information including dispatch and records access (Messmer, 2007). To set this up, the systems use FIPS 201-approved encryption for security, which the state required (Messmer, 2007). The cities use microwave antennas and radios to send information back and forth as well (Messmer, 2007). The network allows access to law enforcement databases as well as fast connectivity between these three cities, which are within a 20-miles radius of one another. This three-city connection is only one of a number of technological innovations that are assisting law enforcement today and in the future. Some years ago, Corrections Forum (2007) wrote about West Covina in California, and how its municipal leaders began to discuss monitoring convicted sexual predators living in the city through implementation of global positioning system technology. The plan called for tracking device to be placed on the predators, with information transferred, through GPS, to appropriate pagers, mobile phones and e-mail (High-Tech Help in Tracking Predators, 2007). Then there is technology being used to help make patrols easier without a cruiser. The Seattle Police Department, for example, put a limited number of wearable wireless video cameras on patrol officers (Miller, 2009).
