Lone Jack Mine and the development of Twin Lakes. The North Fork of the Nooksack River is filled with many unusual and fascinating environmental formations that have occurred as the direct result of natural disasters. The Church Mountain landslide, which dates back nearly twenty-five hundred years, is one of these unfortunate incidences that has since brought the area a distinctive character unlike anywhere else. Educated guesses have cited an earthquake as the probable cause of the landslide that hastily made its way to the valley floor; only with other tricks of Mother Nature has the majority of damage been masked by such coverings as trees, soil erosion and deposits from stream flow. The student might consider the fact that soil erosion can play a part if there is ever another landslide, because the need for soil erosion control is due mainly to mans degrading activities upon the land, such as pollution, overcultivation and deforestation. It is estimated that water- and wind-based soil erosion constitutes a combined eighty-four percent of all global degeneration. Furthermore, soil erosion is responsible for hundreds of millions of dollars of annual costs. The student may want to discuss how geotextiles are utilized in order to stop - if not reverse - the damage already created by way of, for example, placing the fabric over a pre-seeded slope where the soil is protected from runoff while the plant base is given the opportunity to regrow. The fundamental purpose of covering the slope with a geotextiles sheet - preferably non-woven fabrics - is so that weeds are deprived of light so as not to be able to break through and suffocate the sprouting vegetation. The fact that Church Mountain is already forested makes one realize the importance of soil erosion control, ...
